Page Under Construction Measure of a Leader The Legendary Leadership Formula for Producing Exceptional Performers and Outstanding Results by Aubrey C. Daniels and James E. Daniels (Caution: If you are a knower rather than a learner and believe leadership is all about charisma and gravitas, there is no need to read on. It will be a waste of your time. If however you are a learner and adhere to evidence-based management, please read on. You will wish you had been exposed to the research and logic in this book years ago. Even for learners, some of what research proves is counter intuitive to common beliefs, just like the belief years ago that the earth was flat. There are over 16,000 published books on leadership. Most are overly simplistic and do not pass the test of legitimate evidence-based research. This book does. It is based on the science of behavior. You don't lead by results; you lead to results; and only behavior will get you there. You are a leader only if you have followers. Follower behavior, not leader behavior, defines leadership. True leaders bring out the best in their people, whether it is defined by courage and heroism or by integrity and diligence. Four criteria of the follower's behavior define leadership. Followers deliver discretionary behavior directed toward the leader's goals; Followers make sacrifices for the leader's cause; Followers tend to reinforce or correct others so that they also conform to the leader's teachings and example; Followers set guidelines for their own personal behavior based on their perceived estimate of that which the leader would approve or disapprove.
The difference between a leader and a great leader: Magnitude of their impact. Duration of their impact. Number of followers.
Leaders are found everywhere - people do not have to be in positions of authority for others to look to them for guidance and approval. An organization chart is a management tool, not a device that locates leadership. One role of a leader is to assure the quality of management - a leader must be involved in management to the extent necessary to ensure that systems and processes are in place that outlive personalities, so that that the leader's legacy survives successive management changes. Focus on the model of leadership, not the leader. Managers should not mistake form for the essence of leadership. We recommend: "Playing The Enemy. Nelson Mandel and The Game That Made a Nation" by John Carlin for an example of a great leader.
